Description
This Caramel Apple Upside-Down Cake features tender spiced cake baked over a layer of gooey caramel and soft apples. A simple yet stunning fall dessert perfect for Thanksgiving or cozy weekends.
Ingredients
2 apples, peeled and thinly sliced
2 large eggs
1½ cups all-purpose flour
1½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
1 cup brown sugar
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
11 tbsp unsalted butter
¼ cup milk
½ cup sour cream or plain yogurt
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
2. Melt 5 tbsp butter and 1 cup brown sugar in a saucepan; stir until smooth. Pour into pan.
3. Arrange apple slices over caramel.
4. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
5. Beat 6 tbsp butter and granulated sugar until creamy. Add eggs, vanilla, sour cream, and milk. Mix well.
6. Combine wet and dry ingredients; stir until just blended.
7. Spread batter over apples.
8. Bake 40–45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
9. Cool for 10–15 minutes, then invert onto a plate.
10. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
For a twist, try adding bourbon to the caramel or substitute pears for apples.
Use room-temperature ingredients for best texture.
If caramel sticks to the pan, heat and drizzle it on top.
